To a certain extent it is. You have to deal with thirty to forty students,
each with different problems in learning and socialising. You have to mark the homework,
prepare notes, teaching aids, teaching schedules, accessment papers, worksheets and
teaching lesson plans(may be). You have to be a class master/mistress, a club advisor, a
member of a funcitonal team like guidance, a house advisor, a teacher of three or may be
four syllabuses. You may also have posts like teacher development, teachers'
welfare, advisor of students' association or parents and teachers association. You have
also occassional works like training students for competition, publishing school journal...
The above descriptions are not exhaustive so far.....So what? I still like to be a
teacher.

Post "Exam adjusted for IT" 22-11-98
Educators always say that the teaching in Hong Kong is too examination
oriented. Apart from the vast amount of content, the examiniation syllabus has a lot of
facts to memorise. Now we are speaking of IT (Information Technology) in education which
requires the skill of collecting facts and analysing facts, rather than memorising them.
In my opinion the exam.syllabus have to be revised to:
1. further cut the content,
2. impose more analysing skill rather than memorising skill (provide more data or formulas
in the paper),
3. put more weighting on teacher assessment.
I am talking about exam syllabus not teaching syllabus. I suggest to cut
the exam syllabus because I want both the teacher and the students to have more time in
preparing lessons and learning the techniques in computers. In this beginning stage, both
the teachers and the students are adapting to the IT environment, so work load of teachers
are increased. Furthermore, there is not enough teaching material to share among teachers.
I agree with you that if IT is running smoothly and modes of teaching are developed well,
both the teachers and the students are using IT comfortably, then the exam syllabus should
be increased.

Nowadays many schools have the problem of having outsiders wondering around the school's
surroundings. They are usually younsters just quitted school. They usually have their hair
dyed, smoking and chatting with foul languages. They wait for the students afterschool and
sometimes find their targets or just want to make some trouble. I think it is a
responsible act for the teachers to advise their students to stay away from these
gangsters. Not all people waiting outside the school are bad guys but it is understandable
for the school to try to make it a safe place for the majority of students. If you think
that the school is really doing
something very unreasonable, talk to your parents and let them discuss the matter with the
school.
It is wrong for the teacher to "ban" the students talking to each other at
school. May be he doesn't want the students to gather at the front entrance of the school
and chatting there. I think he should "advice" rather than "ban" the
chatting of the students.

If the government wants to promote IT in education, the students have to learn through
self-learning, they have to find information from internet
and other sources, they have to "digest" the knowledge instead of
memorising them... a lot of new data analysis skills and presentation
skills are needed. I think the syllabuses of all subjects have to be
revised or may be shrank a little bit. IT will upgrade the quality of
education but on the other hand it demands more preparation from teachers and more time
from students in searching, discussing, presenting, assimilating the data. The style of
exam. should also change to cope with the new mode of learning. More data should be
provided in the test papers for the candidates to analyse, relieve the students' heads
from memorising hard facts.

I think the nature of QEF is the same as all other project based funding:
you have the right proposal, they give you the necessary money. If the
approval of the proposal is based on whether the background of the school is better then
you are right, it will make the richer richer. But if the
assessment of the proposal is based on the project itself then it is a fair
deal. Someone said that we should put more recourse to a minority of
schools and let them bring out fruitful results first, so that we can have
some models to follow; while others prefer we injet money to all schools
equally because of fairness, well, this is a long debate...
